RESUMO

Cellulose is an abundant biomass on the planet. Various cellulases from environmental microbes have been explored for industrial use of cellulose. Marine fish intestine is of interest as one source of new enzymes. Here, we report the discovery of genes encoding two ß-glucosidases (Bgl3A and Bgl3B) and four endo-1,4-ß-glucanases (Cel5A, Cel8, Cel5B, and Cel9) as part of the genome sequence of a cellulolytic marine bacterium, Microbulbifer sp. Strain GL-2. Five of these six enzymes (excepting Cel5B) are presumed to localize to the periplasm or outer membrane. Transcriptional analysis demonstrated that all six genes were highly expressed in stationary phase. The transcription was induced by cello-oligosaccharides rather than by glucose, suggesting that the cellulases are produced primarily for nutrient acquisition following initial growth, facilitating the secondary growth phase. We cloned the genes encoding two of the endo-1,4-ß-glucanases, Cel5A and Cel8, and purified the corresponding recombinant enzymes following expression in Escherichia coli. The activity of Cel5A was observed across a wide range of temperatures (10-40 ˚C) and pHs (6-8). This pattern differed from those of Cel8 and the commercial cellulase Enthiron, both of which exhibit decreased activities below 30 ˚C and at alkaline pHs. These characteristics suggest that Cel5A might find use in industrial applications. Overall, our results reinforce the hypothesis that marine bacteria remain a possible source of novel cellulolytic activities.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Examining how overweight/obesity impacts thyroid nodule development in children and adolescents by sex and age can speculate on the mechanism. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether overweight in children and adolescents are associated with thyroid nodule development by sex and age. DESIGN: Approximately 300,000 participants who underwent thyroid ultrasonography in the Fukushima Health Management Survey after a nuclear accident were enrolled. Those without nodules in the initial two examinations (1-3 and 4-5 years postaccident) were prospectively assessed for nodule development in the third examination (6-7 years postaccident) relative to baseline overweight status, with an average follow-up of 4.2 years. SETTING: A population-based prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: The first and second thyroid examinations involved 299,939 and 237,691 participants, respectively, excluding those with thyroid nodules. After the third examination, 184,519 participants were finalized for analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios of new detected thyroid nodules for overweight participants compared with normal-weight participants. RESULTS: New thyroid nodules were detected in 660 participants. Being overweight was positively associated with thyroid nodules. The adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of thyroid nodules for overweight participants compared with other participants was 1.27 (1.04-1.57). Additionally, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios for males and females with overweight were 1.21 and 1.32, respectively, and those for different age groups (0-9, 10-14, and 15-19 years) ranged from 1.17 to 1.75. CONCLUSIONS: Being overweight was associated with thyroid nodules in children and adolescents, mostly adolescent females, regardless of their proximity to the nuclear power plant.

RESUMO

Prior research has identified a variety of task-dependent networks that form through inter-regional phase-locking of oscillatory activity that are neural correlates of specific behaviors. Despite ample knowledge of task-specific functional networks, general rules governing global phase relations have not been investigated. To discover such general rules, we focused on phase modularity, measured as the degree to which global phase relations in EEG comprised distinct synchronized clusters interacting with one another at large phase lags. Synchronized clusters were detected with a standard community-detection algorithm, and the degree of phase modularity was quantified by the index q. Notably, we found that the mechanism controlling phase modularity is remarkably simple. A network comprising anterior-posterior long-distance connectivity coherently shifted phase relations from low-angles (|Δθ| < π/4) in low-modularity states (bottom 5% in q) to high-angles (|Δθ| > 3π/4) in high-modularity states (top 5% in q), accounting for fluctuations in phase modularity. This anterior-posterior network may play a fundamental functional role as (1) it controls phase modularity across a broad range of frequencies (3-50 Hz examined) in different behavioral conditions (resting with the eyes closed or watching a silent nature video) and (2) neural interactions (measured as power correlations) in beta-to-gamma bands were consistently elevated in high-modularity states. These results may motivate future investigations into the functional roles of phase modularity as well as the anterior-posterior network that controls it.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In contrast to the antihypertensive effect of esaxerenone, there is little evidence of its cardioprotective effect. We investigated the efficacy and safety of esaxerenone in patients with uncontrolled hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy taking a renin-angiotensin system inhibitor (RASi) or calcium-channel blocker (CCB). METHODS: This was a multicenter, open-label, exploratory study with a 24-week treatment period. Esaxerenone was orally administered at an initial dose of 2.5 mg/day (maximum dose: 5 mg/day). The primary endpoints were the change in morning home systolic blood pressure (BP)/diastolic BP and change and percentage change in left ventricular mass index (LVMI) from baseline to end of treatment (EOT). Key secondary endpoints included change from baseline in bedtime home and office BP, achievement rate of target BP, and safety. RESULTS: In total, 60 patients were enrolled. Morning home systolic/diastolic BP was significantly decreased from baseline to EOT in the total population (- 11.5/ - 4.7 mmHg, p < 0.001) and in both the RASi and CCB subcohorts (all p < 0.01). Significant reductions in bedtime home and office BP were shown in the total population and both subcohorts. LVMI was also significantly decreased from baseline to EOT in the total population (- 9.9 g/m2, - 8.5%, both p < 0.001) and both subcohorts (all p < 0.05). The incidences of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and drug-related TEAEs were 35.0% and 3.3%, respectively; most were mild or moderate. No new safety concerns were identified. CONCLUSION: Esaxerenone showed favorable antihypertensive and cardioprotective effects and safety in hypertensive patients with cardiac hypertrophy. RESUMO

The main cause of diffuse thyroid goiter is autoimmune chronic thyroiditis, otherwise known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Thyroid hormones play pivotal roles in growth and development during childhood. However, the prevalence of diffuse goiter and the relationships between diffuse goiter, thyroid volume, cysts and nodules, and anthropometric measurements in children are not well known. Among 789,459 participants who participated in thyroid ultrasound examinations, 320,206 participants (male: 161,728; female: 158,478) aged 1-23 years were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to calculate the odds ratios of the standard deviation score of body mass index (BMI-SDS), the SDS of bilateral width multiplied thickness area (BWTAR-SDS) as a provisional determination of thyroid volume, and the presence of nodules or cysts for positive diffuse goiter compared with negative diffuse goiter after correction for sex and age. The prevalence of diffuse goiter increased in a female-dominant manner with aging. Compared with the absence of diffuse goiter, the age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for BMI-SDS (1 SD), BWTAR-SDS (1 SD), cysts, and nodules were 1.24 (1.21-1.27), 3.21 (3.13-3.29), 0.53 (0.50-0.58), and 1.38 (1.17-1.64), respectively. The odds ratios of nodules for positive diffuse goiter were 4.18 (1.08-16.08), 1.76 (1.01-3.07), 1.80 (1.32-2.45), and 1.34 (1.08-1.67) in the age groups 1-7, 8-11, 12-15, and 16-23 years, respectively. The age-dependent increase in the prevalence of diffuse goiter was independently associated with increased BMI and positive prevalence of nodules in young individuals.

RESUMO

The house fly is known to be a vector of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in animal farms. It is also possible that the house fly contributes to the spread of ARB and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among various environments. We hypothesized that ARB and ARGs present in marine fish and fishery food may gain access to humans via the house fly. We show herein that pAQU1, a marine bacterial ARG-bearing plasmid, persists in the house fly intestine for 5 days after fly ingestion of marine bacteria. In the case of Escherichia coli bearing the same plasmid, the persistence period exceeded 7 days. This interval is sufficient for transmission to human environments, meaning that the house fly is capable of serving as a vector of marine-derived ARGs. Time course monitoring of the house fly intestinal microflora showed that the initial microflora was occupied abundantly with Enterobacteriaceae. Experimentally ingested bacteria dominated the intestinal environment immediately following ingestion; however, after 72 h, the intestinal microflora recovered to resemble that observed at baseline, when diverse genera of Enterobacteriaceae were seen. Given that pAQU1 in marine bacteria and E. coli were detected in fly excrement (defined here as any combination of feces and regurgitated material) at 7 days post-bacterial ingestion, we hypothesize that the house fly may serve as a vector for transmission of ARGs from marine items and fish to humans via contamination with fly excrement.

RESUMO

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are widespread environmental pollutants of biological origin that pose a significant threat to human, animal, and plant health, as well as to ecosystems. ARGs are found in soil, water, air, and waste, and several pathways for global dissemination in the environment have been described. However, studies on airborne ARG transport through atmospheric particles are limited. The ARGs in microorganisms inhabiting an environment are referred to as the "resistome". A global search was conducted of air-resistome studies by retrieving bioaerosol ARG-related papers published in the last 30 years from PubMed. We found that there is no dedicated methodology for isolating ARGs in bioaerosols; instead, conventional methods for microbial culture and metagenomic analysis are used in combination with standard aerosol sampling techniques. There is a dearth of information on the bioaerosol resistomes of freshwater environments and their impact on freshwater sources used for drinking and recreational activities. More studies of aerobiome freshwater environments are needed to ensure the safe use of water and sanitation. In this review we outline and synthesize the few studies that address the freshwater air microbiome (from tap water, bathroom showers, rivers, lakes, and swimming pools) and their resistomes, as well as the likely impacts on drinking and recreational waters. We also discuss current knowledge gaps for the freshwater airborne resistome. This review will stimulate new investigations of the atmospheric microbiome, particularly in areas where both air and water quality are of public health concern.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) complicating renal dysfunction (RD) are recognized as being at high risk. Although diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major cause of RD, the prognostic impact of coexisting DM on mortality in patients with AMI complicating RD is ill-defined. This study compared the prognostic impact of coexisting DM in patients with AMI complicating RD according to both age and sex. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted on 2988 consecutive patients with AMI complicating RD (estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2). Multivariable Cox regression analysis was performed to investigate the effects of DM on in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: Statistically significant interactions between age and DM and between sex and DM for in-hospital mortality were revealed in the entire cohort. Coexisting DM was identified as an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 2.543) in young (aged <65 years), but not old (aged ≥65 years), patients. DM was identified as an independent risk factor (HR, 1.469) in male, but not female, patients. Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that DM correlated with significantly low survival rates in patients that were young or male as compared to those who were old or female. CONCLUSIONS: There were significant differences in the prognostic impact of DM on in-hospital mortality between young and old as well as male and female patients with AMI complicating RD. These results have implications for future research and the management of patients with DM, RD, and AMI comorbidities.

RESUMO

Marine bacteria are possible reservoirs of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) originating not only from clinical and terrestrial hot spots but also from the marine environment. We report here for the first time a higher rate of the sulfonamide-resistance gene sul4 in marine bacterial isolates compared with other sul genes. Among four sulfonamide-resistance genes (sul1, sul2, sul3, and sul4), sul4 was most abundant (45%) in 74 sulfonamide-resistant marine isolates by PCR screening. The order of abundance was sul4 (33 isolates) >sul2 (6 isolates) >sul3 (5 isolates) >sul1 (1 isolate). Whole-genome sequencing of 23 isolates of sul4-expressing α- and γ-proteobacteria and bacilli revealed that sul4 was not accompanied by known mobile genetic elements. This suggests that sul4 in these marine isolates is clonally transferred and not horizontally transferable. Folate metabolism genes formed a cluster with sul4, suggesting that the cluster area plays a role in folate metabolism, at which sul4 functions as a dihydropteroate synthase. Thus, sul4 might be expressed in marine species and function in folate synthesis, but it is not a transferable ARG.

RESUMO

The drug absorption profile is dependent on the luminal drug concentration, which in turn is influenced by the gastrointestinal (GI) fluid dynamics. In the present study, therefore, we aimed to examine the luminal fluid dynamics by kinetically analyzing fluid absorption and secretion along the GI tract in rats using the in situ closed-loop technique with non-absorbable fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran 4000 (FD-4) and tritium water labeling ([3H]water) under different osmotic conditions. We found that the luminal fluid volume in the jejunum and ileum, but not the colon, gradually decreased and reached a steady state. In contrast, [3H]water almost completely disappeared in all intestinal regions. Kinetic analysis revealed the following rank order for the rate constant of fluid secretion: jejunum > ileum > colon, whereas a negligible regional difference was observed in the rate constant of fluid absorption. Fluid secretion under an isosmotic condition (300 mOsm/kg) was higher than that at 0 mOsm/kg in all intestinal regions, though no significant changes in fluid absorption were observed. Thus, the fluid secretion process appears to be the major determinant of the regional differences in GI fluid dynamics. Our findings indicate that the luminal fluid volume is altered as a result of water ingestion, absorption, and secretion, and finally reaches an apparent steady state, which is regulated mainly by the process of fluid secretion.

RESUMO

In response to concerns about health due to radiation exposure, the Fukushima Prefecture launched the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination program for residents aged 0-18 years at the time of the earthquake. Herein, we considered the confounding factors involved in the regional differences in the development of thyroid cancer. In this study, the 242 065 individuals who participated in both first- and second-round surveys were classified into four groups by address according to their air radiation dose. The number of participants diagnosed as malignant or suspicious for malignancy by cytological examination were 17, 38, 10 and 4 with detection rates of 53.8, 27.8, 21.7 and 14.5 per 100 000 participants in Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Sex (P = 0.0400), age at the time of the primary examination (P < 0.0001) and interval between the first- and second-round surveys (P < 0.0001) were significantly different among the four regions, and these were suspected to be confounding factors affecting regional differences in malignant nodule detection rates. In addition, significant regional differences were observed in the participation rate in the confirmatory examination (P = 0.0037) and the fine needle aspiration cytology implementation rate (P = 0.0037), which could be potential biases. No significant regional differences in the detection of malignant nodules were found in the multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for the survey interval alone or for sex, age and survey interval. The confounding factors and biases identified in this study that may have important impacts on thyroid cancer detection rate should be fully considered in future studies.

RESUMO

We investigated the mechanism of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) chain scission through in situ hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at room temperature, 200 °C, and 230 °C. The C-C bonds in the main chain and C-F bonds in the side chains were broken, and F desorption from the PTFE surface was observed at room temperature. The formation of CF3 was also observed from the recombination of broken C-C bonds in the main chain and detached F, which were not induced by soft X-rays. In contrast, when the PTFE substrate was irradiated with hard X-rays at 200 °C, the CF3 intensity initially produced by recombination reactions decreased with irradiation time, and the photoelectron spectrum retained the original PTFE spectrum. Under these conditions, the F1s/C1s intensity ratio did not change with the irradiation time; hence, the fragment containing only CF2, the chemical composition of the original PTFE, was desorbed. When the substrate temperature was 230 °C, the CF3 intensity increased in relation to that at 200 °C. This result indicated that the formation of CF3 via recombination reactions of broken molecular chains is enhanced by thermal assistance. These phenomena were considered to be based on the balance between recombination and desorption by photochemical and pyrochemical reactions. These results will lead to a better understanding of the use of X-ray-irradiated fluorine resins and PTFE in potential space-based environments. This study will also promote the improvement of PTFE microfabrication methods and thin-film formation using synchrotron radiation.

RESUMO

Since the processes of dissolution and membrane permeation are affected by the water content in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the water dynamics in the GI tract is expected to have a significant impact on the absorption of orally administered drugs. Here, we aimed to develop a physiologically based fluid kinetic (PBFK) model using GI water kinetic parameters obtained from in situ closed-loop studies in rats in order to quantitatively predict GI water dynamics. By incorporating the experimentally measured site-specific parameters of GI water absorption and secretion into a GI compartment model, we developed a bottom-up PBFK model that successfully simulates the reported GI fluid dynamics in rats and humans observed using positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, respectively. The simulations indicate that the water volume in both the stomach and duodenum is transiently increased by water ingestion, while that in the intestine below the jejunum is unchanged and remains in a steady state in both rats and humans. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis of the effect of ingested water volume on the volume-time profiles of water in the GI tract indicated that the impact of ingested water is limited to the proximal part of the GI tract. Simulations indicated that changes in water kinetic parameters may alter the impact of the ingested water on GI fluid dynamics, especially in the proximal part. Incorporating this PBFK model into a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) absorption model has the potential to predict oral drug absorption in a variety of GI water environments.

RESUMO

We previously described the thyroid volume, which was calculated by measuring the thyroid width, thickness, and longitudinal length using ultrasonography, in children and adolescents. We have proposed a simplified method for quantitatively assessing the thyroid size, to overcome the inaccuracy and challenges in measuring the longitudinal length of the thyroid. Based on measurements of 317,847 (girls: 156,913, boys: 160,934) children and adolescents, we calculated sex-specific means and standard deviations of thyroid width and thickness, and of the cross-sectional area computed by multiplying them, for every age and 0.1 m2 of body surface area, after ensuring normal distribution with Box-Cox transformation. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that female sex, age, and body surface area were independently associated with areas of each thyroid lobe. Our novel method may be useful in quantitatively assessing the thyroid size, and appropriately diagnosing pathological conditions, such as hypoplasia, atrophy, and enlargement of the thyroid gland, in children and adolescents.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The existence of a paradoxical association between overweight/obesity and survival benefits, the so-called obesity paradox, in heart failure (HF) as well as coronary artery disease (CAD) remains contentious. Previously, we reported that a past history of CAD negated the obesity paradox in the general population with acute HF. Herein, we further focused on HF complicating acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and compared the prognostic effects of overweight/obesity with respect to the severity of HF. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study of 7265 consecutive patients with AMI. The severity of HF was categorized according to the Killip classification. Overweight/obesity was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of ≥25 kg/m2. The interaction between overweight/obesity and the Killip classification for in-hospital mortality was tested in the entire cohort. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the effects of overweight/obesity on in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: Across the entire study cohort, 1931 patients had HF. Overweight/obesity had a significant association with reductions in in-hospital mortality in patients with mild HF (Killip class II; odds ratio [OR], 0.284; P = 0.019). Conversely, overweight/obesity was a significant risk factor for in-hospital mortality in patients with severe HF (Killip class IV; OR, 2.152; P = 0.001). The effects of overweight/obesity on in-hospital mortality in patients with moderate HF (Killip class III) were intermediate between those with mild HF and severe HF. CONCLUSION: Opposing effects of overweight/obesity on in-hospital mortality in patients with mild HF versus severe HF were demonstrated, suggesting a balance between beneficial and deleterious effects of overweight/obesity may be inclined toward the latter with the severity of HF complicating AMI.

RESUMO

The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, and the subsequent tsunami caused an accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, in which extensive damage to the nuclear power reactors resulted in massive radioactive contamination. Fukushima Prefecture implemented the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination (TUE) program as part of the Fukushima Health Management Survey project in response to residents' anxieties about health risks due to radiation exposure for residents aged 0-18 years at the time of the nuclear accident. This program consisted of the primary examination and the confirmatory examination. In the primary examination, thyroid nodules and cysts were examined using portable ultrasound apparatuses. The confirmatory examination was performed to have clinical or cytological diagnosis. As of June 30, 2021, 116, 71, 31, 36, and 9 examinees in the first, second, third, and fourth round of surveys, and the survey at age 25 years, respectively, were determined to have nodules cytologically diagnosed as malignant or suspicious for malignancy. The confirmatory examination of the fourth-round survey and the primary and confirmatory examination of fifth-round survey are currently in progress. Together with the low thyroid absorbed radiation dose estimated in the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation 2020 report, our results suggested that the increased incidence of childhood thyroid cancer in Fukushima Prefecture was not caused by radiation exposure, but rather by the highly sensitive detection method. As detailed in this review, there were ongoing challenges in our program, such as actions against the risk of overdiagnosis and psychological support for participants and their families.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: After the first-round (Preliminary Baseline Survey) ultrasound-based examination for thyroid cancer in response to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, two rounds of surveys (Full-scale Survey) have been carried out in Fukushima Prefecture. Using the data from these surveys, the geographical distribution of thyroid cancer incidence over 6 or 7 years after the disaster was examined. METHODS: Children and adolescents who underwent the ultrasound-based examinations in the second- and/or third-round (Full-scale) survey in addition to the first-round survey were included. With a discrete survival model, we computed age, sex, and body mass index standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for municipalities. Then, we employed spatial statistics to assess geographic clustering tendency in SIRs and Poisson regression to assess the association of SIRs with the municipal average absorbed dose to the thyroid gland at the 59-municipality level. RESULTS: Throughout the second- and third-round surveys, 99 thyroid cancer cases were diagnosed in the study population of 252,502 individuals. Both flexibly shaped spatial scan statistics and maximized excess events test did not detect statistically significant spatial clustering (P = 0.17 and 0.54, respectively). Poisson regression showed no significant dose-response relationship: the estimated relative risks of lowest, middle-low, middle-high, and highest areas were 1.16 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52-2.59), 0.55 (95% CI, 0.31-0.97), 1.05 (95% CI, 0.79-1.40), and 1.24 (95% CI, 0.89-1.74). CONCLUSION: There was no statistical support for geographic clustering or regional association with radiation dose measures of the thyroid cancer incidence in the cohort followed up to the third-round survey (fiscal years 2016-2017) in Fukushima Prefecture.

RESUMO

Background: Alcohol-a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF)-is metabolized by aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2). Dysfunctional alleles of ALDH2 (ALDH2-deficient variants) are prevalent among East Asians. Objectives: Because the prevalence of AF is estimated to be high in ALDH2-deficient variant carriers, we investigated the correlation between AF and ALDH2-deficient variant carriers, including the association with habitual alcohol consumption. Methods: A total of 656 consecutive patients were included in this investigation. ALDH2 genotypes were divided into ALDH2 homozygous wild-type (∗1/∗1), ALDH2 heterozygous-deficient allele (∗1/∗2), and ALDH2 homozygous-deficient allele (∗2/∗2). Multivariate analyses were applied to determine the correlation between ALDH2 genotype and AF. Results: ALDH2∗1/∗2 and ALDH2∗2/∗2 carriers who were ALDH2-deficient variant carriers comprised 199 (30.3%) and 27 (4.1%) patients, respectively. Among these patients, the proportions of habitual alcohol consumption were 26.1% and 0%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that ALDH2∗1/∗2 itself was not a risk factor for AF (odds ratio [OR]: 1.28; P = 0.21). However, habitual alcohol consumption in ALDH2∗1/∗2 carriers was an independent risk factor of AF (OR: 4.13; P = 0.001). Contrary to expectations, ALDH2∗2/∗2 itself had a lower incidence of AF among other risk factors (OR: 0.37; P = 0.03). Conclusions: Although the ALDH2∗1/∗2 itself was not associated with AF, ALDH2∗1/∗2 carriers with habitual alcohol consumption could experience AF because of slow alcohol metabolism. In contrast, ALDH2∗2/∗2 itself had a lower incidence of AF. This might be related to the absence to habitual alcohol consumption in ALDH2∗2/∗2 carriers because of the negligible activity of ALDH2. Thus, abstaining from alcohol consumption might prevent the development of AF in patients who are ALDH2∗1/∗2 carriers.

RESUMO

Integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) play a role in the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). We herein report an ICE from Shewanella halifaxensis isolated from fish intestine with a similar structure to both a clinical bacterial ICE and marine bacterial plasmid. The ICE was designated ICEShaJpn1, a member of the SXT/R391 family of ICEs (SRIs). ICEShaJpn1 has a common core structure with SRIs of clinical and fish origins and an ARG cassette with the pAQU1 plasmid of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae, suggesting that the common core of SRIs is widely distributed and ARG cassettes are collected from regional bacteria.
